after the school hours. The two children now go to their school from Alipore Women’s Correctional Home everyday.

Sisters of Apostolic Carmel, our partner in the programmes for prisoners’ children, did the running around and formalities including affidavits for birth certificates, etc for the admission of both the children in a reputed school at Alipore, Kolkata.

The school authorities, somewhat hesitant in the beginning since they had never dealt with such admission cases before this, eventually agreed, after a few meetings. Matrisangha Janakalyan Ashram, another of our valuable partners, readily offered to provide a vehicle for the journey of the children to and from the school regularly.

Prisoners’ Children in National Children’s Science Congress

We are encouraging prisoners’ children living back home in the community to participate in National Childrens’ Science Congress organized by NCSTC, New Delhi under Department of Science & Technology, Government of India for last two years to nourish the scientific aptitude among children till age of 16 years. Whereas we arranged to send two prisoners’ children to 15th National Childrens’ Science Congress in 2007, in 2008 we sent 6 such children in two teams to participate in the 16th National Childrens’ Science Congress. We also organized their coaching by our own staff in association with NCSTC.

As a result one team out of two qualified for the national level event. Moloy Naskar, S/O Murari Mohan Naskar of South 24-Parganas District represented his team at the National

event held at Dimapur, Nagaland from 27.12.08 to 31.12.08. We intend to take some concrete steps in the coming year for suring participation of correctional family children at a much bigger scale. Participation with other children of civil society on such a platform at national level will surely help these children from extremely marginalized section of society to uphold their morale and confidence.
