As the advent of British Raj in India took place from undivided Bengal, a large number of jails of Bengal still have their past British time heritage.

Prisoners’ bodies called "Panchayats" are constituted to help correctional home administration in the field of education, vocational training, other prison services and in protecting privileges and amenities available to the prison inmates.
The concept of self help groups is now integral to most fields of activity and has formed into a movement.
We have achieved 100% convict literacy in all correctional homes of the State on April 01, 2007. Various measures are now being undertaken not to send back even a single illiterate UTP coming to the correctional homes.
Annual sports competitions are being organized in different correctional homes for inmates and the children accompanying their parents. Help of NGO partners is also being taken in this respect.
Of the total prison population there are on an average up to 8-10% women prisoners lodged in the correctional homes of the State at any given point of time.
Children below 6 years are permitted by law of India to stay with their mothers in the correctional homes. Special facilities have been provided so that they can lead normal life to the extent possible and can have healthy growth like others.

After seven weeks of ‘Theatre Workshop’ and rehearsals a group of 24 convicts, staged Rabindranath Tagore’s "Taser Desh" at Berhampore Central CH on 26th November, 2006.
