Metamorphosis
- In case of high security prisoners the record of the conversation is preserved for longer period.
- The inmate is allowed to make two calls per week (total 8 calls in a month) of five minutes each on any of the pre-notified three numbers.
- The phone gets automatically disconnected after five minutes.
- The inmate and or his relation pays Rs. 50/- per month in lieu of the service.
The Facility, We Hope, Will Bring Following Benefits:
- Lesser harassment of family members who have to travel long distances to meet their near and dear ones lodged in correctional homes.
- Better mental health of the inmates as a result of regular communication with family members.
- Increased security as lesser turn out of relatives for interview at the correctional home.
- Protection of the prisoners’ right to communication with relatives and friends granted under Section 79 (2) (i) of the West Bengal Correctional Services Act, 1992.
- Lesser corruption in the system.
At present 3 central correctional homes like Alipore Central Correctional Home, Presidency Correctional Home and Dum Dum Central Correctional Home have that phone facilities.
After reviewing the success of the pilot project, we intend to extend the facility to other central correctional homes and important district correctional homes of the State gradually.
