Prisoners Perform For Delegates Of 3rd All India Prison Duty Meet At Bhuwaneswar
4-6 February, 2010
The Bureau of Police Research & Development has started the All India Prison Duty Meet on the lines of the All India Police Duty Meet for the staff of Prison Department in different States. West Bengal could not participate in the first All India Prison Duty Meet at Chennai in 2002 and the second one at Ahmedabad in 2007. This year, however, we decided that we must not miss out on such an important opportunity of interaction with our brethren in Prison Departments of other States. Hence, a 54-member strong contingent was deputed to represent the State of West Bengal in the 3rd All India Prison Duty Meet held at Bhubaneswar, Orissa from 4-6 February, 2010.
The performance of the contingent was impressive, to say the least. It bagged Championship Trophies for Football, Athletics and First Aid apart from individual medals in other events which included 5 Gold Medals, 4 Silver Medals and 3 Bronze Medals. Thus, there could not have been a more forceful beginning by the State in the All India Prison Duty Meet.
The Prison Duty Meet was also a golden opportunity for us to take our culture therapy programme to other parts of the country. We, therefore, decided to take the Valmiki Pratibha troupe of prisoners to Bhubaneswar to stage a performance for the delegates so that they could see with their own eyes how hardcore convicts can become sensitive human beings through exposure to our rich culture. This we thought would definitely inspire the other States to undertake similar programmes for treatment, transformation and rehabilitation of the offenders. The performance has definitely inspired a few States who declared in the meet itself that they would start culture therapy in their respective states forthwith. The members of the contingent as well as those of the cultural troupe of Valmiki Pratibha comprising 40 convicts including 10 women convicts were treated to a heart-warming tour of Dhaulgiri, Konark and Puri by Prison Directorate, Orissa. It was indeed a memory to cherish for lifelong for the prisoners in the cultural troupe as it may not have otherwise been possible for them to visit these places ever in their entire lifetime.
