On Children’s Day with the children of prisoners

The afternoon before Children’s Day, we got a phone call. It was from Raj Bhavan. The Secretary to the Hon’ble Governor was on the line. He said that the Governor wanted to spend Children’s Day with the children of prisoners. We were delighted. We could not think of a more wonderful gift to give the children on this day which belongs to them. And true to the character of His Excellency, he wanted his visit to be a quiet affair, without any pomp and show.

The next day we made arrangements for a quiet visit to Alipore Women’s Correctional Home by the Hon’ble Governor, where he was received by Home Secretary Sri Ardhendu Sen. The Governor mingled with the children, who were simply thrilled…the love and affection showered on them evidently touched their hearts…the glee on their faces said it all.

The Governor also brought sweets for the children which were devoured by them. Taking a cue from this gesture of Hon’ble Governor we arranged to distribute sweets to every single child in the correctional homes of the State on the day.
