A Unique Experiment - Preservation & Restoration of Heritage Structures

Murshidabad has its own history with countless heritage structures in its own, unique style. And Lalgola a bordering small town in the same district, situated on the western bank of River Padma has its own. naturally, the sprawling 60.69 acres of land gifted by the Royal family of Lalgola to the State Government in 1960 has quite a few of these heritage structures including some temples and a palace, a guest house, deuri in the Victorian style. A preservation and restoration work of few of these heritage structures like Lalgoleswar Mandir, Durga Mandir, Kali Mandir & Deuri and the palace complex of Lalgola Open Air Correctional Home is going on at present at Lalgola Open Air Correctional Home in co-operation with Indian National Trust for Art & Cultural Heritage. A large number of convict inmates who are skilled masons have been shifted to Lalgola Open Air Correctional Home for the purpose. The INTACH has organized training to the inmates in this very specialized area of work. Thus the convicts are getting necessary and additional technical skills which may help them in their rehabilitation after their release or even being lodged at Open Air Correctional Home. This project bagged the USA Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation Award Grant in 2007. The Grant amount of Rs. 28 lakhs ($64,553 approx) is awarded for a two-year period. However, more than the money, it is the sense of dignity and self-respect that the inmates will have gained through execution of this noble project that is more important for us.
